Kadena High students gain career insights through AVID TED Talk Series
Okinawa, Japan – AVID students at Kadena High School recently participated in the launch of the school’s TED Talk Series—an initiative designed to connect students with real-world advice and inspiration. The first speaker, Principal Dr. Bleecker, shared practical strategies for career readiness, sparking meaningful reflection among students about their futures.
The talk centered around three key themes: understanding leadership roles, navigating career paths, and mastering the job interview process. Students were encouraged to think beyond surface-level perceptions—such as the idea that principals “just sit in offices”—and instead explore the deeper responsibilities of leadership, including managing people, facilities, and organizational success.
One of the most powerful messages students took away was the importance of broadening their world. Dr. Bleecker emphasized that many people choose careers based on what they see around them—family, friends, or local opportunities. AVID, however, helps students expand their vision through its foundational WICOR skills: Writing, Inquiry, Collaboration, Organization, and Reading. These skills equip students to succeed not only in school, but in future careers.
According to Nicolas Bowers, an AVID sophomore, “Getting a degree to have in your back pocket as a backup plan” resonated with him, reinforcing the importance of preparation and long-term thinking.
Students also gained valuable interview strategies, thanks to insights shared by Dr. Bleecker and KDHS AVID teachers. These included:
Preparing by researching the company and role.
Practicing common interview questions found online.
Showing confidence through body language and thoughtful questions.
Demonstrating perseverance and a willingness to grow.
Asking meaningful questions at the end of the interview to show genuine interest and preparation
Nicole Howell, an AVID senior, shared, “This TED Talk made sure that students know that nothing is beyond their reach.”
The AVID TED Talk Series is more than just a speaker event—it’s a platform for students to connect classroom learning with real-world application. As the series continues, Kadena High students will hear from a variety of professionals, each offering unique perspectives to help them dream bigger, prepare smarter, and pursue meaningful careers.
